A Global Research Agenda
for Nutrition Science
As far as science has come in establishing the importance of good nutrition, there remain many inadequately answered questions — from the effectiveness of past and current nutritional interventions to the core functioning of many of the biological processes involved. For real progress to be made against the global crisis of malnutrition, a consensus must be built around the most critical of these knowledge gaps.
The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science, under the umbrella of The New York Academy of Sciences, and in collaboration with the World Health Organization, has launched a global initiative to formulate a research agenda for nutrition science to set the stage for new explorations, finding ways to best translate this agenda into effective action to improve human nutrition worldwide.
This Agenda was created through a collaborative process involving stakeholders from every aspect of the global nutrition community.
To begin the process, The Sackler Institute assembled a Research Advisory Group, made up of independent experts from the nonprofit and academic sectors.

This group identified three focus areas that represent the broad categories where further research is most needed. Working groups were then assembled that further refined each focus area and identified a total of twenty-five key issues of high interest and critical gaps in knowledge.

In a phased approach, a web-based consultation was then implemented for each of these focus areas, in order to seek input on the agenda from a broad cross-section of the nutrition community, including philanthropists, policy makers, program implementers, researchers, and representatives of the private sector. Robert Black, MD, MPH

Robert Black, MD, MPH

Robert Black is Professor and Chair of the Department of International Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. He has served as a medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and worked at institutions in Bangladesh and Peru on research related to childhood infectious diseases and nutritional problems. His current research includes field trials of vaccines, micronutrients and other nutritional interventions.

As a member of the US Institute of Medicine and advisory bodies of the World Health Organization, the International Vaccine Institute, and other international organizations, Dr. Black assists with the development of policies intended to improve child health. He currently chairs the Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group and the Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative, and has on-going projects in Bangladesh, Benin, Ghana, India, Mali, Pakistan, Peru, Senegal, Zanzibar and Zimbabwe. Dr. Black also has more than 400 scientific journal publications and is coeditor of the textbook International Public Health.

Francesco Branca, PhD

Francesco Branca, PhD

Dr. Branca is Director of Nutrition for Health and Development, World Health Organization, Switzerland. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery and specialized in Diabetology and Metabolic Diseases at the Universita' Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome and obtained a PhD in Nutrition at Aberdeen University.

Before joining the WHO, he was Senior Scientist at the Italian Food and Nutrition research Institute where he was responsible for the design and implementation of several studies on the effects of food and nutrients on human health at the different stages of the life cycle and for the design, management and evaluation of public health nutrition programs. He has also served as President of the Federation of the European Nutrition Societies.

Kathryn Dewey, PhD

Kathryn Dewey, PhD

Kathryn Dewey is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Director of the Program in International and Community Nutrition at the University of California at Davis. She received her PhD in Biological Sciences in 1980 from the University of Michigan, joining the faculty at UC Davis that same year. The major focus of her research is lactation and infant nutrition. She has conducted clinical and community-based research in the U.S., Central America and Africa, where studies have contributed key evidence prompting changes in global policies and guidelines regarding infant feeding and nutrition and assessment of child growth.

She is a consultant for the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Pan American Health Organization, NIH, and the March of Dimes. She is also past President of the Society for International Nutrition Research and of the International Society for Research on Human Milk and Lactation. She is currently Project Director of the iLiNS Project, a multi-university initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop and evaluate lipid-based nutrient supplements for prevention of malnutrition in pregnant and lactating women and their children under two years of age. Dr. Dewey has received several national and international awards for her work.

David Pelletier, PhD

David Pelletier, PhD

Professor of Nutrition Policy at Cornell University since 1993, Dr. Pelletier teaches and conducts research and public engagement related to the development, implementation and evaluation of food and nutrition policy. Most recently, he worked on design principles for an integrated community nutrition program and the strengthening and implementation of National Child Health Weeks in Haiti, and strategic capacity and adaptive management in Sub-Saharan Africa. Holding a Ph.D. and M.A. in anthropology in anthropology with a minor in nutrition from Pennsylvania State University, and a B.A. in anthropology and B.S. in biology from the University of Arizona, Dr. Pelletier has formulated nutrition programs and policies for the New York State Department of Health and around the world. His studies include behavioral characteristics and biological risk factors for cardiovascular disease in Western Samoa, analysis of the maternal and nutritional influences on prenatal and infant growth in American Samoa, iron fortification factors in China, the effects of transnational migration and nutrition on childcare in Guatemala, and PhD study programs in several African countries.

Werner Schultink, PhD

Werner Schultink, PhD

Werner Schultink joined UNICEF, where he currently serves as Chief of the Nutrition Section, in April 1999, and has held a number of senior positions both at Headquarters in New York, where he was a Senior Nutrition Advisor, and in the India Country Office, where he led the Child Development and Nutrition Section.

Before joining UNICEF, Dr. Schultink had extensive experience working with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation, where he served as an advisor on issues of curriculum development of post-graduate courses and research management in community nutrition. He obtained his Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from the Agricultural University of Wageningen in the Netherlands, and his doctoral research led him to Benin where he studied seasonal variations in the nutritional status and energy requirements of rural Beninese women. Dr. Schultink has written extensively about nutrition issues in the developing world in both academic journals and specialized books.

Andrew Serazin, PhD

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Andrew Serazin, PhD

Andrew Serazin is Senior Program Officer, Global Health Discovery for The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he leads a team in new scientific approaches and technologies for maternal, neonatal, and child health. He founded and led Grand Challenges Explorations, an early-stage medical research fund that has attracted ideas from over 20,000 scientists in more than 100 countries, which has established 400 active projects.

Previously, Dr. Serazin held a faculty position in the Zoology Department at University of Oxford, teaching courses on the biology of disease and conducting infectious disease research. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, where he received his doctorate for work on developing new genomic technologies to accelerate design of drugs and vaccines against malaria.

Dr. Serazin is a member of the College of Science Advisory Council of the University of Notre Dame, where he received his undergraduate degree. He has also advised several biotechnology and IT startups, is a contributor to Scientific American, and a participant in several working groups of the World Health Organization. His work on both parasite and vector biology has been presented at international meetings and in peer-reviewed journals.

Patrick Webb, PhD

Tufts University

Patrick Webb, PhD

As Dean for Academic Affairs for the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, Patrick Webb oversees the only graduate and professional school of nutrition in North America, where he influences international nutritional policies through the design of food security programs, agriculture policies, and global food aid. His programs combine food policy analysis with development policy and planning, looking at household consumption and expenditure, nutrition intervention design and evaluation, humanitarian response, risk, and vulnerability analysis.

Dr. Webb also has extensive field experience, coupled with strategic analysis and advocacy involved in policy dialogue at the highest levels of government. He led the United States Agency for International Development's review of food aid quality from 2009 to 2011, served on the United Nations' Hunger Task Force from 2003 through 2005, and is currently the Program Director for the USAID-supported Nutrition Collaborative Research Support Program. He was also in North Korea for the 2004 survey of nutrition, health and mortality, on the ground in Aceh after the 2004 tsunami, and in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Previously, he served as Chief of Nutrition for the United Nations World Food Programme in Rome, where he was part of the Millennium Development Goals Hunger Task Force reporting to Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Receiving his Ph.D. in Economic Geography and an M.A. in African Studies at the University of Birmingham, UK, Dr. Webb also subsequently spent nine years with the International Food Policy Research Institute, living in Ethiopia, Niger, and Gambia, helping to alleviate famine, a subject about which he has written extensively.

Mandana Arabi, MD, PhD

Mandana Arabi, MD, PhD

Dr. Arabi is an expert in international nutrition and has facilitated nutrition programming in more than fifteen countries with high burdens of malnutrition. As Founding Executive Director of The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences, she is leading a global initiative to develop a research agenda for nutrition science and build public-private partnerships with corporations, nonprofits, academia and government bodies to implement the research outcomes in the field.

She was previously Nutrition Specialist, Complementary Feeding Nutrition Section for UNICEF, and Nutrition Advisor with the Ministry of Health and the World Bank in Iran. She holds a medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences and a Ph.D. in Nutrition from Cornell University, where she is currently a member of the Nutritional Sciences Advisory Board.

Edward Frongillo, PhD

Arnold School of Public Health, University of South Carolina

Edward Frongillo, PhD

Edward Frongillo is Chair of the Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior at University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health, where his research primarily focuses on the study of nutrition. His work includes establishing growth standards and improving the development and feeding of infants and young children. Additionally, he examines the role that family stress and parenting plays in improving nutrition, as well as the effect policy has on family nutritional health.

Anna Herforth, PhD

Nutrition Policy Independent Consultant

Anna Herforth, PhD

Currently an independent consultant, Anna Herforth holds a Ph.D. in international nutrition from Cornell University, an M.S. in food policy from Tufts University, and a B.S. in plant science from Cornell University. She has worked with academia, nonprofit organizations, CGIAR agencies and the UN, contributing to nutrition policy and programs in Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. In each region, she spent considerable time with agricultural and indigenous communities. Previously, she was a Food Security and Nutrition Consultant with the Food and Agriculture Association of the UN, and a Nutrition Specialist with the World Bank.

Nabeeha Mujeeb Kazi, MIA, MPH

Nabeeha Mujeeb Kazi, MIA, MPH

Nabeeha Mujeeb Kazi is Managing Director of Humanitas Global Development (HGD). She has directed high-profile global food-security initiatives and designed advocacy, public-private partnership, community mobilization, behavior change, and stakeholder engagement programs. Kazi's team has collaborated with numerous high-profile international organizations including Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, World Bank, World Health Organization, Save the Children, and UNICEF.

Previously, Ms. Kazi served as Senior Vice President and Partner at Fleishman-Hillard, a global communications firm, and has worked for the Clinton Foundation's HIV/AIDS Initiative, focusing on Caribbean and African countries and for the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Mexico. Ms. Kazi serves on the boards of FINCA International and United Neighborhood Centers of America, and has served on several taskforces and committees with partners like Scaling Up Nutrition, Millennium Villages, Feed the Future, and the New York Academy of Sciences. She holds a Master of Public Health and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University.

Demetre Labadarios, MD, PhD

Demetre Labadarios, MD, PhD

Dr. Demetre Labadarios is the Executive Director of the Population Health, Health Systems and Innovation (PHHSI) research program of the Human Sciences Research Council. His interests center on national surveys, social determinants of health and nutrition, nutrition training, nutrition support, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and nutrient requirements as altered by disease and the environment.

He is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the South African Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the African Editor of Nutrition: The International Journal of Nutritional Sciences, the President of the South African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Honorary Professor Extraordinaire at the University of Limpopo, reviewer for a number of national and international peer reviewed Journals, an elected Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, and author or co-author of more than 250 scientific publications, as well as Pocket Manual of Clinical Nutrition, Recent Advances in Clinical Nutrition and the Epidemiology of Nutritional Diseases in Greece and Clinical Nutrition: Early intervention.

He has also served as a consultant to WHO, UNICEF, and International Atomic Energy Authority of the United Nations, and provided technical support to national surveys sponsored by the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.

Mireille Seneclauze McLean

Mireille Seneclauze McLean

Mireille Seneclauze Mclean is Program Manager at the Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences. She was previously the Public Health Project Coordinator at the Bureau of Public Health in the Paris, working specifically on the tuberculosis control program. Prior to this, she worked for several international NGOs, defining and implementing nutrition, health, food security, sanitation and psychosocial programs for vulnerable population groups in Sri Lanka, Sudan, Chad, Nepal and the West Bank and Gaza. She holds an MA in Development Economics and International Development from the University of Sussex and an MPH from the University of Liverpool.

Frederic Mousseau

The Oakland Institute

Frederic Mousseau

Frederic Mousseau is the Policy Director at the Oakland Institute where he coordinates the Understanding Land Investment Deals in Africa project focused on research, advocacy and policy work on food security as it relates to investment in agriculture and arable land, food price volatility, and the global food crisis. Trained as an economist, Mr. Mousseau has worked as a staff member and consultant for international relief agencies for nearly two decades, including Action Against Hunger, Doctors Without Borders, and Oxfam International. In addition to providing leadership to several relief efforts as the Country Representative, he has also designed and supervised food security programs in more than 30 countries across Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and Africa. He also conducts numerous reviews and studies on food security policies, programs and institutions; and he has authored numerous reports and articles in international media outlets.

Dr. Chizuru Nishida is a Coordinator and Senior Scientist with the WHO Department of Nutrition for Health and Development, responsible for the program areas related to obesity, nutrition policies, food and nutrition security, and dietary guidelines.

Erica Oakley

Erica Oakley

Erica Oakley is Project Associate for Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance at Humanitas Global Development. Previously, she was a Project Associate for the FANTA-2 program at the Academy for Educational Development, and a Program Associate at Futures Group International. She holds an MA in Conflict Studies and Human Rights in Conflict Studies and Human Rights from Universiteit Utrecht.

Prabhu Pingali, PhD

Prabhu Pingali, PhD

Prabhu Pingali is the Deputy Director of Agricultural Development at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Dr. Pingali has over 25 years of experience in assessing the extent and impact of technical change in agriculture in developing countries worldwide and has received several international awards for his work. Some of his prior positions include Director of the Agricultural and Development Economics Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Foreign Associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association, and President of the International Association of Agricultural Economists. He has been a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University's Food Research Institute, Affiliate Professor at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños, and he has authored nine books and over one hundred referred journal articles and book chapters on technological change, productivity growth and resource management issues in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Franco Sassi, PhD

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development

Franco Sassi, PhD

Franco Sassi is Senior Health Economist at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation. Dr. Sassi's research interests focus on the economic analysis of health services, including the evaluation of diagnostic and screening interventions, multi-attribute utility assessment techniques for measuring health outcomes, measures of equity in economic analysis, and inequalities in health and access to health care. He is a former Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellow in Health Care Policy and lecturer in Health Policy in the Department of Social Policy and Administration at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He was also a visiting fellow at Duke University's Center for Health Policy Research and Education participating in the Stroke Prevention PORT project, and he's held visiting positions at the University of California, Berkeley, at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Rome, and, during his Harkness Fellowship, at the University of California, San Francisco and at Harvard University.

Dr. Sassi has served as a temporary advisor to the European office of the World Health Organization on a range of issues including cost-effectiveness of health care services, reshaping health systems towards health outcomes, and health care quality management. He also served on the research team that conducted an analysis of health interventions in the 15 European Union Member States. His early career was spent as a journalist, publishing over 50 articles on economics and management issues.

Tahmeed Ahmed, PhD, MBBS

Tahmeed Ahmed, PhD, MBBS

Tahmeed Ahmed is the Head of the Nutrition Program and Senior Scientist in the Clinical Sciences Division of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research Bangladesh (ICDDR,B). For the last 25 years, he has worked on treatments and public health measures for childhood malnutrition, childhood tuberculosis, and diarrheal diseases and developed a treatment protocol that resulted in a 50 percent reduction in case fatality among children admitted to the hospital with severe acute malnutrition.

Dr. Ahmed was the director of the baseline survey for the National Nutrition Program done in 2005 and recently completed the World Bank-supported large multi-country project known as Mainstreaming Nutrition Initiative. Currently he is the Bangladesh site principal investigator of the multi-country Malnutrition-Enteric Diseases (Mal-ED) Project. This study is investigating the association between malnutrition, enteric diseases and cognitive development. As a member of the Nutrition Task Group in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Ahmed advises the Ministry on various issues related to nutrition.

He is a Professor of Public Health Nutrition at the James P. Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University and also teaches at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. A prolific researcher, he has more than 80 papers published in international journals and books.

David Auble, PhD

Jay Berkley leads a research group focusing on infection and inflammation in childhood malnutrition, and on perinatal health at the KEMRI Centre for Geographic Medicine Research – Coast and Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kilifi, Kenya. He joined KEMRI in 1997, undertaking a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship on invasive bacterial infections and their relationships with malaria, HIV and malnutrition after completing specialist training in pediatrics and sub-specialist training in pediatric clinical immunology and infectious diseases in the UK. Dr. Berkley is involved in the Kenyan national training programme on integrated management of severe acute malnutrition and is an expert adviser to the Ministries of Health and the World Health Organisation.

Zulfiqar Bhutta, PhD

Dr. Bhutta is the Noordin Noormahomed Sheriif Endowed Professor and Founding Chair of the Division of Women and Child Health, Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan. He also holds adjunct professorships at the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, Harvard School of Public Health, Tufts University, University of Alberta, Sick Kids (Toronto), and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He was designated a Distinguished National Professor of the Government of Pakistan in 2007.

He was educated at the University of Peshawar and obtained his PhD from the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh; the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, London; American Academy of Pediatrics; and the Pakistan Academy of Sciences. At the Agha Khan University he heads a large research team working on issues of maternal, newborn and child survival and nutrition, globally and regionally. Dr. Bhutta has served as a member of the Global Advisory Committee for Health Research for the WHO. He is an executive committee member of the International Paediatric Association and the Board of the Global Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH).

Dr. Bhutta was awarded the inaugural Global Child Health Award by the Program for Global Pediatric Research for outstanding contributions to Global Child Health and Research. He won the Kenneth Warren prize for the best systematic review of community based interventions by the Cochrane collaboration in 2011.

Parul Christian, PhD

Parul Christian is a Professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Her research focuses on the role of nutrition in influencing maternal, infant and child health, survival, growth and development in low-income countries, particularly micronutrient deficiencies and their impact on fetal growth, birth outcomes, reproductive health and survival and child survival, growth and development.

Dr. Christian's research in Nepal examined the impact of alternative combinations of micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy in reducing low birth weight and neonatal mortality. Two large community trials in Bangladesh involved maternal vitamin A and beta-carotene supplementation and its impact on maternal mortality and the impact of newborn vitamin A supplementation on infant mortality. Currently, she is co-PI of a trial in Bangladesh, which aims to test the efficacy of maternal multiple micronutrient supplementation in improving infant survival. She also recently completed studies of treatment of severe anemia in pregnant women and young children in Karachi, Pakistan.

Patrice Engle, PhD

Patrice Engle served as Professor of Psychology and Child Development at California Polytechnic State University from 1980 to 2012, and Associate Chair of that department from 2008. The overall goal of her research was building evidence for solutions to the challenges in young children's development from a global perspective, such as poverty, HIV and AIDS, malnutrition or parenting practices.

Previously, Dr. Engle was a Senior Advisor, Early Childhood Development and Chief of Child Development and Nutrition at UNICEF, Visiting Professor and Research Fellow at institutions including Tufts University, the International Food Policy Research Institute, The University of California at Davis and Los Angeles, the Battelle Institute, and the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama, and served on advisory panels and steering committees for dozens of organizations, worldwide. A Fulbright Scholar, she held a PhD in Child Development from Stanford University.

Dr. Engle passed away in September of 2012. The New York Academy of Sciences will be dedicating the conference: "Every Child's Potential: Integrating Nutrition, Health, and Psychosocial Interventions to Promote Early Childhood Development" and the related upcoming special issue of Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences to her memory.

Dr. Finn was appointed by President George W. Bush to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and she served as Director of Nutrition Services at Ross Products (now Abbott Nutrition). Dr. Finn holds adjunct associate professorships in the College of Medicine and the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio State University. Andrea Hsieh, PhD, is a researcher for the Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science within the New York Academy of Sciences. Prior to her role with NYAS, she served as a Visiting-Fellow and Post-Doctoral Researcher within the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University and Senior Nutrition Scientist for the Global Nutrition Science and Regulatory group within Mead Johnson Nutrition. Berthold Koletzko is professor of Pediatrics and head of the Division of Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine at Hauner Children's Hospital, University of Munich Medical Center. His research focuses on metabolism and nutrition in childhood, pregnancy and lactation, metabolic diseases and clinical nutrition. He previously worked in pediatric departments in South Africa and Tanzania, the Children's Hospital of the University of Düsseldorf, and the Hospital for Sick Children at the University of Toronto.

Anna Lartey is an Associate Professor and former Head of Department, Nutrition and Food Science, at the University of Ghana. Her research focuses on maternal child nutrition. She served on several WHO Expert consultations on child nutrition and was Co-Principal Investigator for the WHO Multicenter Growth Reference Study, Ghana site.

Dr Lartey currently leads the Ghana delegation to the Codex Committee on Nutrition for Special Dietary Uses, and she serves on the MRC International Nutrition Group's Scientific Advisory Committee, the Council of the African Nutrition Society, the Food and Nutrition Bulletin Editorial Board, Bioversity International Scientific Advisory Council, and Harvest Plus Program Advisory Committee. Her work is predominantly focused on research and integrated strategies to improve nutrition in women and children, managing grants that span the Nutrition and MNCH portfolios, including research activities on maternal nutrition and fetal growth, developing and testing new products for home fortification of lipid-based nutritional supplements, and testing innovative models for delivering integrated breastfeeding-complementary feeding interventions at scale, such as Alive & Thrive Initiative in Ethiopia, Bangladesh, and Vietnam.

Previously, Dr. Piwoz was Director of the Center for Nutrition at the Academy for Educational Development in Washington, DC. She also held faculty appointments in the Schools of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where she directed the Sustainable Approaches to Nutrition in Africa Project, advised the US Agency for International Development's Bureau for Africa and PEPFAR programs, and conducted research on nutrition, infant feeding, and HIV in Africa. Daniel Raiten is the Health Scientist Administrator of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at NIH. Dr. Raiten has a broad background in basic and applied aspects of nutrition with an emphasis on behavioral, neurophysiological, and neurochemical assessment methodologies. He has led development of strategic regional relationships, particularly with the 15-nation West African Health Organization. Stuart Gillespie is a Senior Research Fellow in the Poverty, Health, and Nutrition Division of the International Food Policy Research Institute in France, as well as CEO of the Transform Nutrition Research Program Consortium, a six-partner consortium that seeks to transform thinking and action on "the neglected crisis of undernutrition" in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, and Research Director of the LANSA consortium (Leveraging Agriculture for Nutrition in South Asia), both DFID-funded. In recent years, he has led the TANDI project (Tackling the Agriculture-Nutrition Disconnect in India), supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and coordinated the Agriculture and Health Research Platform (AHRP), with support from the International Development Research Center. Between 2001-2010 he specialized in action research on the interactions between HIV and food and nutrition security, and their implications for development policy and practice, having co-founded and managed the Regional Network on AIDS, Livelihoods and Food Security (RENEWAL) based in eastern and southern Africa. Past work has focused on understanding 'what works' in malnutrition reduction, scaling up community driven development, and developing methodologies for community capacity analysis.

Paige Harrigan is a Nutrition Specialist and Advisor for Save the Children in Washington, DC and a member of the Board of Directors of the CORE Group: Working Together in Health for Mothers, Children and Communities. The CORE Group provides resources and links for child survival, integrated management of childhood illness, malaria, polio and resources for the PVO and NGO community. In her more than 15 years experience in international nutrition programming, she has specialized experience in improving infant and young child feeding practices, behavior change, monitoring and evaluation. Ms. Harrigan recently co-authored with the CORE Group and FANTA-2 the "Nutrition Program Design Assistant." Sue Horton is the CIGI Chair in Global Health Economics. She specializes in health, nutrition and labor market issues in developing countries. Dr. Horton has worked in 20 developing countries, and she has consulted for the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, several United Nations agencies, and the International Development Research Centre. She has also edited four books, and is the author or co-author of more than 50 refereed journal articles and book chapters and 30 technical publications. Dr. Kraemer has 25 years of research and advocacy experience in the field of health, bioavailability and safety of vitamins, minerals and carotenoids. He is editor of Sight and Life magazine, one of the most widely distributed scientific magazines on micronutrients and nutrition in the developing world. Joy Del Rosso

Joy Del Rosso is a Senior Nutrition Advisor for Save the Children in New York and Co-Chair of the Working Group on Nutrition of School-Age Children at the United Nations, which identifies the main health and nutrition issues for school aged children to be the persistent stunting and underweight, micronutrient deficiencies, overweight and obesity in countries undergoing the nutrition transition, malaria, water and sanitation related diseases, helminth infections, and anaemia and HIV/AIDS. She was formerly Senior Nutrition Advisor for the Manoff Group, and she is the author of Class Action: Improving School Performance in the Developing World Through Better Health and Nutrition and Investing in Nutrition With World Bank Assistance.

Edelweiss Wentzel-Viljoen is a trained dietician with experience working in both rural and urban areas in South Africa on behalf of North-West University, South Africa. She has extensive expertise in nutrition research, dietary methodology, food composition data, curriculum development, continuing professional development for health professionals, project management (including the organization of international congresses) and monitoring and evaluation. She has 30 years of experience in the field of nutrition at a provincial and national level in South Africa, and amongst many other roles, she was responsible for evaluations of the Primary School Nutrition Program at both government levels and developed a framework for the evaluation of nutrition programs. Dr. Wentzel-Viljoen is also involved with South Africa's program FUEL in provincial projects, specifically in the area of menus and nutrition.

Keith West is Associate Professor, Ophthalmology & International Health of Dana Center for Preventive Ophthalmology, The Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on using nutrition to improve the health and survival of infants, children, adolescents and women of reproductive age in underserved populations, with special interests in the assessment and prevention of micronutrient deficiencies, especially vitamin A, and protein-energy malnutrition. Much of this research has involved conducting population-based epidemiologic studies and intervention trials. In recent years, his work has broadened to explore effects of developmental nutrition exposures later in life and nutriproteomics as a platform for micronutrient deficiency assessment. Dr. West was awarded the Kellogg International Nutrition Prize 2007.

Raoul Bino is Director of the Agrotechnology and Food Sciences Group at Wageningen University, The Netherlands. He holds a PhD from Wageningen, and previously served there as Professor of Plant Metabolomics and General Director of the Plant Sciences Group.

Dr. Bino has also served as a member of the scientific advisory boards for the Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology at the University of Copenhagen and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB), Halle, Germany; the governing board for green genetics at the Technological Top Institute; the steering committee of the Netherlands Centre for Metabolomics and the Centre for Biosystems Genomics, which he chaired; the Member Management Board of KnowHouse BV; the Member Advising Board of Foundation Innovation Flowers and Food; and the program board of the 6th Plant Genetics European Meeting, Tenerife. He is an elected board member of the European Plant Sciences Organization, and a member of the EU-META-PHOR project on technology development for plant applications.

Dr. Bhutta is the Noordin Noormahomed Sheriif Endowed Professor and Founding Chair of the Division of Women and Child Health, Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan. He also holds adjunct professorships at the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, Harvard School of Public Health, Tufts University, University of Alberta, Sick Kids (Toronto), and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He was designated a Distinguished National Professor of the Government of Pakistan in 2007.

He was educated at the University of Peshawar and obtained his PhD from the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh; the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, London; American Academy of Pediatrics; and the Pakistan Academy of Sciences. At the Agha Khan University he heads a large research team working on issues of maternal, newborn and child survival and nutrition, globally and regionally. Dr. Bhutta has served as a member of the Global Advisory Committee for Health Research for the WHO. He is an executive committee member of the International Paediatric Association and the Board of the Global Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH).

Dr. Bhutta was awarded the inaugural Global Child Health Award by the Program for Global Pediatric Research for outstanding contributions to Global Child Health and Research. He won the Kenneth Warren prize for the best systematic review of community based interventions by the Cochrane collaboration in 2011.

Michele Cecchini is a health economist/policy analyst in the OECD Health Division, where he has been working on the economics of prevention project. In particular, he contributed to the design of the CDP micro-simulation model and conducted analyses aimed at assessing the cost-effectiveness and distributional impacts of alternative strategies to tackle obesity and related chronic diseases. He also contributed to the analysis of past trends and future projections of overweight and obesity.

After obtaining a degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Genoa, Dr. Cecchini completed his specialist training in Public Health at the University of Siena. He obtained a masters degree in health policy, planning and financing from the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Alan Dangour is Senior Research Fellow, Agriculture Research at DFID in London and head of the Nutrition Group at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is a Certified Public Heath Nutritionist, with a background in biochemistry and biological anthropology.

For the past ten years, Alan's primary research focus has been nutrition in older age, and he has conducted a series of trials to determine the effectiveness of nutrition interventions for the maintenance of health and function in later life. Dr. Dangour is the principal investigator of the OPAL and OPEN studies, co-investigator in a cost-effectiveness evaluation of the national program of nutritional supplementation in older people in Chile (CENEX-Chile), and part of the inter-disciplinary team behind the Leverhulme Centre for Integrative Research on Agriculture and Health.

Richard Deckelbaum, MD

Richard Deckelbaum is Robert R. Williams Professor and Director of the Institute of Human Nutrition and Professor of Epidemiology and Pediatrics in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. His research, which has contributed to better understanding of mechanisms whereby human lipoproteins are structurally remodeled in the plasma compartment, factors modulating receptor-lipoprotein interactions, and nutrient-gene interactions, has been supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the US Agency for International Development, and private industry.

Dr. Deckelbaum has also led international NIH and USAID programs integrating nutrition with risk factors of cardiovascular disease in children, as well as the molecular biology of intestinal parasites with clinical and epidemiological manifestations of infection, with emphasis on chronic diarrhea and malnutrition. His research complements a professional interest in global health, which grew out of work in the Middle East and Africa.

Barbara Dennison is the Director of Policy and Research Translation in the Division of Chronic Disease Prevention at the New York State Department of Health. She serves as the point contact for the Division in the development of state policy and legislative initiatives to improve public health, and as the Division policy liaison with New York State Health Departmental Divisions, Offices and Centers, Governmental Affairs, other State agencies and external organizations in the development of chronic disease prevention policies and legislation.

Molly Kretsch is the USDA's Agricultural Research Service Deputy Administrator, providing national scientific and technical leadership for program planning, coordination, review, and evaluation of the ARS intramural research programs in Human Nutrition, Food Safety, and Quality and Utilization of Agricultural Products. Collateral duties over the past year included serving as the senior adviser to the USDA under secretary and chief scientist for Research, Education, and Economics (REE) in the priority areas of nutrition and food safety. Recently, she represented REE on the First Lady's Childhood Obesity initiative "Let's Move," the President's Task Force on Child Obesity, and the President's Food Safety Working Group.

Previously, Dr. Kretsch served as the ARS National Program Leader for Human Nutrition, providing programmatic leadership to the internationally recognized USDA human nutrition research centers; a research scientist at the USDA Western Human Nutrition Research Center; and an adjunct associate professor at the University of California, Davis. She is a member of a number of professional organizations including the American Society for Nutrition and the American Dietetic Association. She received her RD from the University of California Medical Center at San Francisco and her PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of California at Davis, and completed a Postgraduate Fellowship in human nutrition at the University of California at Berkeley.

Shiriki Kumanyika, PhD

Shiriki Kumanyika is a Professor of Epidemiology and the Associate Dean for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School Of Medicine, and was the Founding Director of Penn's Master of Public Health program. Dr. Kumanyika's research focuses on ways to reduce diet-related chronic disease risks, particularly in African Americans.

Dr. Kumanyika founded and chairs the African American Collaborative Obesity Research Network, a national network that seeks to improve the quantity, quality, and effective translation of research on weight issues in African American communities. She was Vice Chair of the Secretary's Advisory Committee for Healthy People 2020 Objectives, and currently chairs the Institute of Medicine's Standing Committee on Childhood Obesity Prevention, co-chairs the International Obesity Task Force of the International Association for the Study of Obesity, and is a member of the World Health Organization's Expert Panel on Nutrition.

His work in nutrition focuses on addressing malnutrition in developing countries through multi-sectoral alliances that combine the strengths of government, private sector and civil society. Prior to joining GAIN, he served as Food Fortification Specialist with UNICEF's Nutrition Section in New York where he was responsible for providing operational and technical guidance and support to UNICEF's regional and country offices. Dr. Yach has spearheaded several major efforts to improve global health, including helping to place tobacco control, nutrition and chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease prominently on the agenda of governments, non-governmental organizations and the private sector. He led development of WHO's first treaty, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, and the development of the Global Strategy on Diet and Physical Activity. As a South African national, Dr. Yach established the Centre for Epidemiological Research at the South African Medical Research Council.
